How Can I Save Water?

Water is one of the major resources in the world today, and its conservation is vital. Water conservation can’t be spoken about enough, as water is a limited natural resource. The only way to save water is to ensure we preserve it and minimise wastage. There are so many ways to save water effectively to curb water shortages.

Ways to save water

  1. 1.Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or soaping hands

  2.

This is a common example of which most people are guilty. The common act of not turning off the tap while shaving or washing the face is too prevalent. It has surely happened more times than we could count, making this point a very important one. This is very basic practice, which if done daily, can make a huge difference to your water meter reading, especially while brushing your teeth.

Almost 6 litres of water is used for every minute a tap is running. So, just by turning off the tap when you brush your teeth or soaping your hands can help with water wastage.

  1. 2.Take less time in showers

  2.

This is one of the most prominent ways where water gets wasted. Most people leave showers running for fifteen minutes or more, and don’t turn it off when lathering. According to research, an individual uses 12 litres of water per minute in the shower. Imagine if a person takes two showers every day, and multiply that by the number of people occupying the home, this would mean a lot of water would be wasted.

Taking shorter showers is one of the easiest ways to save water, although it depends on a variety of measures, such as the efficiency of the showerhead and the flow of the shower. Taking a 5-minute shower or less would make a huge change in the amount of water used, and could lead to a massive drop in water wastage.

  1. 3. A water-saving toilet flush should be installed

  2.

This is another way water is wasted, as one of the main sources of domestic water wastage comes from flushing toilets. Water from flushing uses around 7-12 litres per flush (depending on your cistern), which is a huge amount of water wasted. By installing a water-saving flush, litres of water could be saved. This method of saving water is becoming popular.

Reducing water usage helps save water bills, and also helps the environment.

  1. 4.Fix leaky taps

  2.

Leaky sinks and faucets result in a lot of water wastage. The continuous dripping of water from a faucet can lead to almost a bucket or more of water wasted, per night. One way to preserve water is to ensure that all sinks and taps are fixed, so there are no leaks.

  1. 5. Use a watering can to water the plants

  2.

Using a watering can instead of a hose to water plants in gardens saves a lot of water. A hose shoots water at full speed, and can’t be controlled as much as a watering can.

Essentially, there are many other ways in which water can be preserved. Adopting new methods and routines can help with your water consumption. Water efficiency calculators and water consumption calculators can be used to keep track of the amount of water being used.
