First of all, we need to know why our homes are overheating. This can come down to some simple factors.

The way we design our homes is constantly changing. We're converting rooms, using the loft space, adding extensions and shuffling round the layout to name a few. Firstly, you have to remember that the Loft space will retain and absorb heat. Heat rises, and converting this space can mean you come across overheating in your home.

The British construction industry has defaulted on the use of synthetic insulation materials, such as polystyrene or mineral wool. This leads to thinner insulation sections sitting on the roof of buildings and increases the risk of overheating.

Is this preventable?

Overheating is becoming more prevalent. So, you need to consider it, and the impact of it, at the design stage. Natural insulation materials, such as wood fibre, have a relatively low diffusivity (heat transfer) than synthetic materials. This means that the materials can help to moderate the internal temperature of a building.

We can reduce the risk of a building overheating by using certain materials. Your assessor will be able to help and advise you on this.

A building that isn't going to suffer from overheating allows for a more comfortable and healthier environment for its occupants.
