Purge ventilation is an intermittent and rapid ventilation technique used in a habitable room using an external window or door. This is done to maintain a pleasant and comfortable living environment.

Why purge?

The purpose of purge ventilation is to do the following:

  • •  Help in the removal of high concentrations of pollutants, air toxins, and water vapour released from activities such as painting         and decorating.

  • •  Help remove such things as smoke from burnt foods or excess water spillage

  • •  Rapidly increase air movement in the summer for comfort within the home

    Is it effective?

For purge ventilation to be effective, air must flow through the entire dwelling. To achieve this, certain provisions must be made. The internal doors must maintain a minimum gap of 10mm above the finished floor surface. By doing this, it gives an area of 7600m2 permanent opening when a door is closed.

It has now become common for mechanical ventilation systems to incorporate a purge function into their systems. Activating this function increases all vents on the system to their maximum capacity, causing all rooms to be flushed of pollutants and stale air. Using this system enables you to purge without opening external doors and windows.
